Our Brewers' Sustainability Commitments

The Beer Store has been a sustainable leader in Ontario for as long as we can remember. We’re proud of the brewers we work with who are also advocating sustainable initiatives and leadership and excited to share with you some of the ingenuity, and drive for the greener and cleaner communities that they are championing.

Bench Brewing

Bench Brewing's sustainability journey started in 2018 with the adaptive reuse of the Maple Grove School and St. Helens Church for our Taproom and Events Centre. A Certified BCorp, Bench has a Zero Wastewater footprint recycling all brewery wastewater for irrigation and fertilizer for our onsite hop yard and nearby apple orchard. All spent grains feed local livestock. Since 2020, we have been certified Carbon Neutral by BMO Radicle Climate Smart through a robust annual carbon footprint inventory and offset investment. With a carbon capture project and future investment in solar panels, Bench will continue to minimize our environmental footprint.

Sleeman Breweries

We take our commitment to water seriously.

Protecting this resource and ensuring everyone has access to clean and safe drinking water matters to us, our employees, and our customers. Through the Sleeman Better Water Fund, we aspire to be an industry leader in supporting Canadian water conservation and promoting clean water accessibility.

Together, we’re helping make better water for all a reality.

The Sleeman Better Water Fund provides $40,000 each year to Canadian non-profit organizations that are creating positive change in our communities in the fields of water conservation and clean water access. We aim to grow this fund over time.

Through these efforts, we support targets within the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, specifically:

Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

Goal 13: Climate Action

Goal 15: Life on Land, which includes protection of groundwater.

Labatt

In 2024, Labatt acquired 10 new battery-powered trucks for its logistics operations in Quebec. The purchase is the largest single order of VNR Electric trucks for Volvo Trucks in Canada, representing nearly 25 per cent of their deliveries. Each electric truck eliminates the emissions of approximately six conventional vehicles. The new fleet will achieve a total reduction in emissions equivalent to that of 60 cars. The delivery trucks, along with the addition of a zero-emission mobile repair service truck earlier in the year, support their ambition to achieve net-zero by 2040.

In April 2021, Labatt announced the largest public renewable electricity commitment ever made by a Canadian brewer. Labatt entered a long-term Virtual Power Purchase Agreement with Capital Power, with Labatt purchasing 51% of the electricity generated from the 75-megawatt Clydesdale Solar facility in Taber, Alberta. The project is fully operational as of December 2022, with more than 80% of the electricity required to brew Labatt beers nationally being sourced from this farm.

Steam Whistle Brewing

Our commitment to sustainability starts with our iconic green bottles. Crafted with 33% more glass, they’re designed to be reused over 45 times — far exceeding the industry standard of 12-15 refills for brown bottles. Plus, our painted label design eliminates contaminants from paper, dye and glue, ensuring a cleaner wash cycle that extends the life of our equipment. This innovative approach reduces waste, improves efficiency, and helps us deliver a fresher, greener beer every time. Cheers to better brewing, one bottle at a time!

Compania Cervecera De Nicaragua S.A.

Compania Cervecera De Nicaragua S.A. is committed to creating one of the most sustainable and accountable breweries in the world and their commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development GOALS ensures that they stay on track. CCN has returned over 4 times the amount of water consumed in production back to the water table through conservation of 300 acres of rainforest and management of over 10 farms achieving water neutrality as a company. Through a recycling program, more than 100% of post-consumer waste was recaptured and recycled or reused. CCN is well on their way to becoming a Zero Waste company.

Lake of the Woods

Lake of the Woods has implemented several stewardship initiatives including utilizing the brew mash in menu items served in the Kenora taproom and donating the spent grain to a nearby farmer to feed to his livestock, planting trees to help offset carbon emissions with their ‘One Beer, One Tree’ program, and their Earth Day event.
