There are two deposit systems in Ontario for beverage alcohol: The Beer Store’s deposit system, and the Ontario Deposit Return Program (“ODRP”).

The Beer Store (“TBS”) manages a deposit system that applies to all products sold and distributed through TBS, including non-alcoholic beer. Product that TBS sells that is also sold through other authorized channels, like the LCBO or grocery stores, is called common product. Even though this common product was sold outside of TBS, it is treated as a TBS deposit system container.

All packaged alcohol, including beer, not sold through TBS is subject to the Ontario Deposit Return Program (“ODRP”). The ODRP is run by the province of Ontario. TBS has been contracted by the province to manage the collection and recycling of ODRP containers.
